BHUBANESWAR: Orissa police subjected eight persons, suspected to be involved
in the August 23 killing of Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati which sparked communal
mayhem in Kandhmal, to lie detector tests on Sunday.
The report would be out within the next few days. No one has so far been
arrested in connection with the VHP leader's murder, although the Maoists have
claimed to have killed him. Infuriated with Saturday's police firing in which at
least two people were killed, tribal Kandh groups held secret meetings in
different parts of south Orissa district and chalked out their strategies.
The district administration reimposed day curfew in Tumudibandh area, which
witnessed exchange of fire on Saturday after hundreds of armed tribals damaged a
church and house of a Pana-Christian at Krutamgada.
As gun-toting security personnel turned Tumudibandh into a fortress, the tribals,
sources said, held secret parleys in G Udaygiri, Baliguda and Daringbadi areas.
While the meeting details could not be gathered, sources pointed out that
tribals were possibly planning to regroup after the police firing dented their
confidence.
