Members of AIDWA, SFI, DYFI and other organisations protest against the abduction of Kerala MLA's daughter in Mangalore, near Corportion Circle in Bangalore

Two arrested for abducting Kerala MLA's daughter

Mangalore (PTI): Two persons have been arrested in connection with the abduction of the daughter of a Kerala MLA, while four others have been picked up for questioning over the incident that has sparked nationwide outrage.

Two youths, hailing from Manjeshwar and employed in Mangalore, have been arrested for forcibly taking away Shruthi, daughter of CPI (M) MLA from Manjeshwar, C K Kunhambu when she was traveling in a bus with a youth belonging to a minority community yesterday, police said on Saturday.

Reacting angrily to the fresh incident in Karnataka which has been in the news for the recent attack on women in a Mangalore pub, Women and Child Development Minister Renuka Chowdhury said in Delhi that there was a "breakdown" of law and order in the State where "Talibanisation" is happening.

"The State government is not in control of the law and order situation... Talibanisation is happening. There is a clean communal divide where a Hindu girl is prevented from talking to a Muslim boy...it is a very dangerous trend," the Minister said.

The captors later released Shruthi after giving her a "lecture" on certain moral issues.

Kunhambu has filed a complaint with police against the accused, suspected to have links with saffron groups.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Yeddyurappa, who is in Nagpur attending BJP's National Executive meeting, termed the case as an "organised conspiracy".

Speaking to PTI, Yeddyurappa alleged that Congress and JDS had hatched a conspiracy to defame his government, hours after Renuka Chowdhury alleged breakdown of law and order in the BJP-ruled State.

NCW seeks report from Karnataka govt on abduction case

New Delhi (PTI): The National Commission for Women on Saturday sought detailed reports from the Karnataka government on the reported kidnapping of a Kerala MLA's daughter and and her male friend by a suspected saffron group.

"I have seen the news that is why we are upset. We are asking the the State government about what happened and (sought)detailed reports," NCW Chairperson Girija Vyas said.

She said the Commission will decide what to do when the reports come. "But I again condemn the act whoever did it. It is unfortunate and the government should stop it."

Barely days after the Mangalore pub attack, moral policing reared its head again when activists of a suspected saffron group dragged the daughter of the MLA and her male friend out of a bus and reportedly kidnapped them before releasing the victims.

The daughter of CPI(M) MLA C H Kunhambu from Manjeshwar constituency in the adjoining Kasargod district in Kerala and her male friend were let off by the activists after they were taken to an undisclosed location and kept captive for about an hour.
