Another Catholic Church Attacked In Karnataka
BANGALORE, Karnataka, SEPT. 19, 2008, 16.40 Hrs (SAR News):
Taking advantage of the tense situation in the coastal Karnataka region post-communal violence, unidentified miscreants attacked the Mount Carmel Church belonging to the Roman Catholic, September 17 night, at Kudremukh in Dakshina Kannada district.
They vandalised a statue of St. Mary, desecrated the holy Bible and broke the windowpanes of the church, even as they made a vain attempt to break open the main door, reports reaching here said.
As news spread, shocked and agitated Christian families and religious nuns in the area assembled on the church premises.
Parish Priest Father Marcel Pinto blamed the State government for the attack and said that the BJP dispensation had not taken any action despite all the hue and cry over the continued attacks on the churches almost everyday in different parts of the State.
Meanwhile, Jagadish Bhat, convener of Bajrang Dal – the Hind group that has allegedly carried out attacks on many churches since September 14, clarified that the outfit was not involved in the vandalism at Mount Carmel Church. The police too ruled out the role of Bajrang Dal.
Church secretary P.S. Anthony condemned the attack and said that there were no incidents of conversions in the region. Six persons have been arrested so far in connection with the attacks.
