Nurse fights minister over 50 lakh dowry
February 1, 2010, Lucknow

Did a UP minister demand 50 lakhs in dowry for his son? Absolutely, says a
25-year-old nurse, Preeti Pal. "Why did they suddenly call off the engagement? I
will move court," she says.
Pal was engaged in October to Om, son of UP Sports Minister Ayodhya Prasad. At
that time, her father, a dentist, gifted three lakhs to the minister.
In December, Preeti says her father was told to pay another fifty lakhs or
forget the wedding. "I went to his house several times. He did not meet me. His
relatives told me that if I pay up Rs 50 lakh, only then will the
wedding
take place, says Prabal Pratap Pal.
A desperate and angry Preeti has filed written complaints to the local police.
"Applications have been given in all district offices. If nothing happens, no
one can stop me from approaching the court," says Preeti.
The minister has refused to comment. A relative of his, HN Pal, says, "The
engagement was called off the day it took place because the boy did not like the
girl."
Will Mayawati wait for a police investigation? In the past, she has jailed four
politicians from her party who faced criminal charges.
"The complaint is against a Cabinet minister. And since this is a case of
Fatehpur-Allahabad, we will have to go there and investigate," says Arpana HS,
Special Superintendent of Police, Chitrakoot.
