Pregnant woman ends life over dowry harassment

Unable to bear the alleged harassment for dowry, a pregnant woman, wife of a
Bescom engineer, committed suicide by consuming poison at Venkateshpuram in K G
Halli police limits.
The deceased is Shabana Bhanu (24). The woman, who was three-months pregnant,
consumed poison on May 17 following which she was admitted to hospital. She died
on Friday. Before taking the extreme step, she left her first baby
(10-month-old) at her parents’ house. Police are yet to arrest the accused.
A complaint of dowry harassment has been registered against her husband, Nadeem
Pasha, a junior engineer of Bescom at Kolar, in-laws Abdul Basadh and Noorjahan
and sister-in-law Shah Jahan.
In the complaint, the victim’s father, Mr Saheb Jaan, a cloth merchant from
Mulbagal in Kolar district, alleged that his daughter had taken the extreme step
unable to bear harassment by the accused. “At the time of the marriage in
2001, we had given Rs 1 lakh, 400 gms of gold, costumes worth Rs 75,000 and
household articles worth Rs 1.5 lakh as dowry. But the accused were harassing my
daughter for a car,” Mr Saheb Jaan stated.
