Rani Tiwari, dowry-slayer, flooded with proposals
Monday May 31, 2010, Mumbai
At
her small house in Mulund, a central suburb of Mumbai, Rani Tiwari and her
brother are scanning the offers of marriage that are pouring in for her. Ahmed
from Bhayander, Raj from Delhi. There have been 50 proposals in the last three
days.
A week ago, Rani shot into fame as a dowry-slayer. The 30-year-old decided to
catch on hidden camera the relentless demands of her fiancé and his family - Rs
five lakh in cash and a car.
It was an arranged match and even the marriage date was set - June 19. But even
after the engagement took place, the demands of the groom's family never ended.
Fed up, she spoke to her family and decided to end it but not before ensuring
she taught them a lesson.
"She wanted to teach them a lesson and along with her brother decided to catch
the grooms family red handed," explains the now proud father.
So the brother sister duo used a hidden camera when the grooms family came
visiting and caught it all on tape.
The video was then handed over to the police who arrested the boy and his
father.
Rani's already decided who she's marrying. A professional singer. Who admires
her courage. "He said, 'don't think I'm doing you a favour'," she explains,
grinning.
Her new fiance's sister was also tormented with dowry requests. So he knows
exactly what it took for Rani to fight back.
Rani is busy preparing for her wedding. But she'll never be a conventional
bride, she says. All her time will be spent helping other women to stand up
against dowry.
