
BANGALORE: A sessions court on
Thursday sentenced a man who poured acid on a woman to five years imprisonment.
The court also imposed a Rs 3-lakh fine on Joseph Rodrigues, now 32 years old,
for the attack on Haseena, now a 25-year-old. The crime was committed in 1999.
Sessions judge Radhakrishna Holla said the imprisonment will be increased by
another four years if the accused fails to pay the fine.
Incidentally, Rodrigues has already served five years of his term. He was
sentenced for offences under IPC Section 326 and Section 201.Rodrigues had
attacked Haseena after she quit a firm he was running, and joined another one.
Haseena, whose face was severely damaged, lost her eyesight and has undergone 13
surgeries.
The victim, who has spent nearly Rs 6 lakh on treatment, depends on her parents
for survival and is supported by Campaign and Struggle Against Acid Attacks on
Women (CASAAW) in her quest for justice. "There has never been conviction in
cases of acid attacks on women in the state until now, excepting for one on the
person who attacked former PM Devegowdas wife "
